Question #3. How do I ensure accountability when students are working in groups?
CONCERNS
SOLUTIONS
Not all students are working on the certain task assigned to them. There is inequity of contribution and some students are freeloading.
A peer feedback/discussion conference assessments prior and after the task will be given to the students so that the teacher will know the propensity of the students contributions to the task at hand. The teacher can also suggest go-rounds (or Circle of Voices), so that each group member will contribute and will be forced to voice out their opinions in the task.
There exists social loafing.
Close monitoring of the group's progress and performance in their assigned task must be taken into consideration. From time to time, the teacher must facilitate an open discussion with the group members.
There might exist a "power struggle or group domination" leading to a chaos of ideas and decisions in the group.
The teacher can assign team roles to the students not only to ensure that active participation will occur but also, that someone will take charge of the group. A group with a dozen superior heads is difficult to manage. The students can also vote for themselves to avoid overlapping of responsibilities.
Members of the group are not listening to one another.
Ensure an activity which will enable each members in the group to talk and listen to one another where there is an ample amount of air time practiced. This strategy can instill in them the value of appreciation and listening to other people's opinions.
Time management = often too many heads entail too much work or desynchronized schedules, resulting to poor time management thus, late submission of the task.
The teacher must already set the time line or a deadline of the submission of the task by which the groups must adhere to. Clear guidelines must also be settled prior to the direction of tasks.

In general, above all the strategies, assessments and methods of facilitation that an educator can utilize to ascertain the accountability of students when working in groups, the teacher must always emphasize and remind the students the importance and value of teamwork.

For, it is through teamwork that they can be able to achieve their goals and outcomes and such a journey will also let them learn and realize more values and insights that they can characterize along and after the task at hand.
